The $3,500 Lesson That Changed How I Handle Equipment Repairs

Repair Man

When I opened my first laundromat, I came from the insurance world, I had zero mechanical experience. I hadn’t even changed my own oil (still haven’t… who has time for that?). I figured the machines were shiny, brand new, and expensive, what could go wrong?

Spoiler: a lot can go wrong.

Baptism by Fire (and Suds)

In the early days, when a washer would act up or a dryer refused to heat, I’d just call my equipment rep. After all, I’d dropped half a million dollars with him, he owed me a little customer service, right? And to his credit, he was extremely helpful. I’d call, he’d walk me through stuff over the phone, and things got fixed… for a while.

But then came the six-month mark. My labor warranty expired, and suddenly those friendly chats turned into expensive invoices. Sure, I still had a three-year parts warranty, but labor wasn’t covered.
*To be clear, my rep still helps me, even when labor warranty has expired at one of my stores. Its the physical repairman they send that costs $$$$ once the warranty is up.

The Wake-Up Call

One quarter, I racked up $3,500 in repair bills. That’s when I said, “Nope. Never again.”

I vented my frustration to my equipment rep, and he casually dropped a bomb that changed everything:
“You know, your equipment manufacturer offers a free repair school.”

Say what now?

The School That Pays You Back

Turns out, every fall, my manufacturer holds a one-day repair school (they have them all throughout the year in cities across the US). I went that year, and it was like stepping behind the curtain in Oz. I learned how to diagnose issues, replace parts, and actually understand how my equipment works.

Now? I fix 99% of issues myself. And you’d be shocked how not complicated these repairs are once someone walks you through them. It’s not rocket science. It’s screws, sensors, belts, and a multimeter.

Bottom Line: Learn Before You Burn Cash

So here’s the deal:
If you’re newer to the business, or even if you’ve been around but still rely on techs for every little thing, go to repair school. Find out when your equipment manufacturer is hosting one, book the day, and show up. Bring a notepad. Bring questions. Bring your humility and leave with confidence.

You’ll save thousands in the long run. And just as important, you’ll stop feeling helpless when a machine blinks an error code you don’t recognize.

Invest in yourself. Your bottom line will thank you.
